The latest revival of La Bohème at San Francisco Opera may be very good indeed, if the final dress rehearsal was any indication. Though I am not crazy about La Gheorghiu, all the signs are good, she may well look and sound completely convincing as Mimi by the opening on Sunday.
Introduction. La bohème is an opera in four acts, composed by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on Scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger. The world premiere performance of La bohème was in Turin on 1 February 1896 at the Teatro Regio, conducted by the young Arturo Toscanini. An opera film is vastly different from a recorded live performance, and it is impossible to compare the two. Each has its own peculiarities and appeal. Robert Dornhelm's film of "La Bohème" is amazingly good. As a favourite opera, I've seen and heard many versions, and did not really expect to find anything "new" in this one.
